NAME: Katsuki Bakugou
CANON: My Hero Academia
CANON POINT: After Chapter 120 of the manga
AGE:16 17
BACKGROUND: A lot of words
PERSONALITY:
(CW for: Bullying, brief mentions of encouraging suicide)
Explosively hot-headed, Katsuki Bakugou acts with the arrogance of being fortunate enough to have the qualities his society sees as valuable. He's too full of himself to even remember the names of his classmates, going so far as to give his childhood classmate and current rival a nickname that means useless. Bakugou is so destructive and cruel at times, that it's hard for many outsiders to empathize with him and he's even seen as a good candidate for a villain. Bakugou is put into situations that shake his sense of reality and self-image, forcing him to learn and change from the cruel teenager who told Bakugou to jump off a roof to an abrasive, but humbled and less unapproachable version of himself.
While Bakugou is privileged to be gifted with an impressive quirk, he's very driven and a hard-worker. His admiration for All Might may have something to do with that, as he holds the same degree of hero worship for the (now former) Number One Hero and Symbol of Peace as the protagonist, Izuku. As if taking his name meaning too literally, Bakugou has always been obsessed with winning and being the absolute best. To him, All Might represents that victory, because he never backs down no matter what the odds.
Originally, Bakugou is excessively confident, thanks to the constant praise and admiration he received throughout his life from both peers and teachers alike. He acts this way until he learns what many teenagers tend to learn when they reach a new high school or college: There are others just as talented, or even moreso, than him. This, along with being made infamous for when he's held hostage by a villain with a sludge quirk, are blows to his pride that he struggles to comprehend. He's fragile because he is confident, becoming both withdrawn and acting out in anger when he feels inadequate. This sense of self-doubt and anger is driven in further by All Might's retirement. Bakugou is a genius, and he's more than competent, he excels, except with handling emotions and people. After being kidnapped and held hostage by the League of Villains, Bakugou witnesses his lifelong hero and idol, All Might, in his true form and lost of his quirk when he's forced to save Bakugou and defeat All for One. His pride and naturally aloof behavior stops him from reaching out for support during the aftermath, but his guilt and self-blame continues to haunt him until he eventually explodes and finds a way to face it head-on the only way he knows how: confronting Izuku.
Bakugou's pride drives him to be better and win, and when he takes an opponent seriously he expects the same in return. His respect toward Uraraka as a serious opponent in the UA Sports Festival was viewed as cruel and unforgiving by most outside spectators, but realized as a sign of respect by Uraraka and Deku. He expects the same treatment in return, which is why he was set off at the expense of himself when Todoroki refused to use his fire half.
Bakugou doesn't make friends easily, and when he does, he categorizes them more as equals he tolerates than what people may think of when they think of friendship. Such is the case with Eijirou Kirishima, the one person who is able to stand on even ground with him and was the one to offer his hand and help Bakugou escape the League of Villains. Had it been anyone else, such as Izuku or Todoroki, Bakugou would have viewed it as a slight and probably had refused. For the other characters in the Bakusquad such as Kaminari, Mina and Sero, he hangs out with them and tolerates them, but still tends to yell and berate them. Still, considered to the beginning of the manga, Bakugou's experiences have led him to mellow out somewhat and socialize in his own angry way, such as when he participated in the UA Cultural Festival as the drummer in Jirou's band, reluctantly following her direction and doing as she asked.
Bakugou may be lacking in compassion in the beginning, as he is so stubborn that he will literally refuse to do something if he doesn't want to. Sometimes this can be a positive trait, such as when he didn't pretend to agree with the League of Villains when he was held hostage because it went against everything he believed. As the series progresses though, he is learning to be helpful by using his experiences to give advice to a kid who acts with the same arrogance he had in the past:
If all you ever do is look down on people, you won't be able to recognize your own weaknesses.
Once Bakugou finally confronts Izuku, and they are able to reconcile, he ends up as more of a grumpy rival to the protagonist rather than a bully. He even gives constructive criticism when Izuku asks him for advice on his new fighting style, something he never would have bothered to do in the past and definitely not something he would do if he didn't think it was worth his time.
Bakugou has made many mistakes, and his personality may still be too abrasive for many people. But he is learning, and he's a teenager, and he's already made a great deal of progress in a very short amount of time from the person he was to the person he is now. If anything, his tenaciousness to always win drives other characters to follow competitively, or as Izuku described it, Bakugou is the image of Victory.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
Bakugou is a sweaty dude.
His quirk, the equivalent of a superpower, is Explosion. It's made possible by the fact that that he secretes a nitroglycerin-like sweat from his palms that he can set off at will. He has a very strong understanding of his quirk and is able to create special moves with it. Bakugou can use his quirk to either travel fast, or fight aerially, seen when he uses Blast Rush Turbo. The explosions keep him in the air and he's shown to cover great distances this way.
Bakugou's quirk can leave a missile-like explosion (Howitzer Impact), or be used to stun the enemy like a stun grenade, but the special move he has been focused on making his own is AP Shot. By using one of his hands to narrow the scope of his blasts, he can create more concentrated attacks, and avoid getting comrades caught in the crossfire or a lot of property damage. Bakugou's attention to detail and his own strengths and weaknesses has led to him creating Grenadier Bracers to both store his sweat and minimize the recoil from the explosions on his arms when he fights, which if used too much could potentially injure him. He can also store his sweat in homemade grenades.
Due to the potential extent of damage his powers can cause, they may need to be nerfed.
Athleticism/Strength: Beyond his quirk, Bakugou has a strong grasp of close ranged hand-to-hand combat, possibly due to getting into fights as a kid, and he puts a lot of work into making sure he's strong and athletic enough to use his quirk properly.
Intelligent: Bakugou is naturally observant of his surroundings, and calculating enough to make quick decisions. He's proven this both in battle, and in times of crisis, able to conclude that the League of Villains wouldn't kill him because they needed him. He also ranked third in the midterm exams.
Musical/Domestic: Bakugou was given drum lessons, and is quite the talented drummer as a result. He's also shown to be quite good at food prep during the Forest Training Arc. Though, like with most things, when complimented by Uraraka he yells in return as most skills seem to come easy to him.
INVENTORY: x2 grenadier bracers, his main weapon which would probably take up 1-2 slots, his hero costume (x1 slot?) and x3-4 hand grenades stored with his sweat if he is able to.
MOONBLESSING: I'm going with Cordis because I want to see him accidentally go too far with a violent prank.
